Social Media Madness!!! - Dyvyne TV

Social Media Madness!!!

Like or Nah

I’m sure the internet was initially meant for good. Having lightening speed access to information unseen was a true blessing, I mean hey, how else were college students able to cut down on researching long term papers that were knowledgeable and impressive? It gave everyone the ability to find out everything they did not know exploring its realms like the vast “unknown”. But like all things both the good and bad can eventually be found. Social Media develops and what do you know? You now have the ability to log onto any site and be seen and heard on a more personal level. You can initiate and end relationships with just a few clicks. Nothing is more impersonal, but this has become the norm of a new age society infused with nothing but technology.

The problem sets in, however, with abusing the privledge and right about now I ask, where are the social media police? There are more posts nowadays capturing abuses, and crimes than ever before boldly intimidating and humiliating users around the world. Some might say without it the perpetrator may have never been caught, but it seems the victim has to raise a lot of noise for it to be noticed at all.

Case in point: Houston, Texas. Two young girls are drugged and sexually assaulted. They wake and sensing they were assaulted, but found the confirmation needed once pictures posted start surfacing of the assault. Naked were pictures floating around of them both on various social media websites.

Cyber bullying and we harassment has quadrupled over the last few years and who is paying attention. Who is questioning or reviewing videos being loaded? Questioning the content and where the footage is coming from… NO ONE.

An avid Facebook user myself, I ran across a huge discussion in which users were working to identify a Navy Recruit who posts “rape related” posts to feminist FB users. Does it take hundreds to have him removed from the benefit of being able to enjoy one of the Worlds biggest social media sites. I myself have been harassed by a crazed fan and after blocking and reporting him along with many others, was disappointed to find his profile still existed. Facebook what say YOU? Do you not feel somewhat responsible for having no screening process and simply allowing anyone with an email address to log in? Are words not as threatening and hurtful or have the same negative reaction as abusive physical tendencies?

I dunno. I guess as consumers and keepers of the peace we just have to do the best we can with this “turn- your- head- away-from- whats- right – society” that we live in. But I say… if you can police everything else into overkill, why not police the Web?!
