Recap: The Steve Harvey Mentoring Program for Young Men - Dyvyne TV

Recap: The Steve Harvey Mentoring Program for Young Men

Steve Harvey. The Comedian. The Author. The Game Show Host. The Father. So much could be said about this man, but my experience with him as a mentor during the Steve Harvey Mentoring Program for Young Men in Dallas, Texas June 10 – 15 of 2014 was my most amazing yet! Organized by the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation their mission statement “Fostering Youth to Excellence” drove the point home.  With their children Brandi and Karli Harvey beside them, and directly involved from organizing to executing this event to its finality, celebrities appeared as planned to educate and inspire the likes of 120 young men flown in from across the U.S. accompanied by their mothers.

From the moment these young men arrived to the ranch they were separated from their mothers and rightfully so as servicemen and drill sargeants from the U.S. Army awaited. Once the buses pulled in the deprogramming began. This was not a game and the young men realized that quickly. Some started off a bit defiant and this was to be expected considering most of these young men came from broken households that are being ran by single parents. Some involved in gangs or showing some type of rebellion, their mothers who were reaching out for help, were selected through an essay writing process. This was it, the moment in which these young men would see what it was like to have real men in their lives, that cared about them enough to “whip them into shape”. Five days of learning commradarie, respect for one another, their mothers and authority was what this camp was about. They enjoyed fishing, obstacle courses, basketball courts, football fields, and the ranch setting. They also listened to celebrities such as Isaac Carree (Gospel Singer), Dr. Roger Mitchell Jr. (Chief Medical Examiner), Bradie James (Former Dallas Cowboy) and many more share their stories of hardship to success. They were instructed on safe sex, how to speak to and respect women, proper attire, and several other topics on manhood.

All the while, in the mother’s tent, another medicine dosage was being given. The raw truth of mothering without rules was presented. Mr. Harvey did not spare them the facts. Each day thereafter they had a full schedule that included doing Zumba with the Mavs Maniacs, receiving motivational pep talks from the likes of Yolanda Adams (Gospel Singer), Queen Afua (Holistic Nutritionist), cardio workouts from Donna Richardson (Fitness Guru), and viewing various types of merchandise from vendors showcasing. Getting both their minds and bodies right, their stay also included a day around Dallas where they had an Etiquette Lunch Lesson at Pappas Bros. and then created their own jewelry at Designing Dallas at Southside on Lamar. Prayer, release, cultivating sisterhood and tears shed… for many reasons this would be an unforgettable experience.

By that Sunday, which was Father’s Day, the event was coming to a close and the mothers were to be reunited with their sons for closing ceremony and departure home. Many were recognized for their performance and making great strides in behavioral changes during their stay. Recognition for completion of the program and talent showcase was completed over lunch, and group pictures taken with Mr. Harvey who was very active with the young men during their entire stay.

This moment would set the stage everyone prayed for… positive change. The moment that would bring out the leadership these young men were capable of displaying. Mr. & Mrs. Harvey (and family) we thank you for allowing us to witness this humanitarian effort. We thank you for your tireless and diligent effort in giving back to the youth and upcoming generation. We are positive that a difference was made in multiple lives and we look forward to the upcoming opportunities to watch you in your element of “Fostering Youth to Excellence”.
